Organic simply means the food is grown, raised, or produced without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, sewage sludge, antibiotics or growth hormones. They are processed without ionizing radiation, food additives, or genetically modified organisms and are produced according to legally regulated standards.
Organic foods were once only available in small specialty stores or farmers markets and were obtained from small family-owned farms.
Now, organic foods are becoming much more widely available as many companies are jumping into the market. Organic food sales in the US have grown 17 to 20 percent over the past few years, while sales of conventional food have only grown about 2 to 3 percent a year.
Organic food can be purchased either fresh or processed. Processed organic foods are most likely found in supermarkets and can be identified by the "certified organic" label. In order to be certified organic, products must be grown and produced in a manner that strictly follows the standards set by the country they are sold in.
